In brief

An AI chatbot answers your prospects even when you are busy. Using a real late-night conversation, we show how Knowlio handles questions about pricing and integration, and why it doesn’t guess when it doesn’t know something.

It is 10:52 pm. You stopped checking your work email hours ago, but a visitor has just sat down at their computer, and right now they want to know how much your product costs and how it works. If nobody answers, by tomorrow morning they will probably be looking at your competitors. An AI chatbot for your website solves exactly this: it answers questions and wins customers even when you are busy or asleep. In this article we use a real late-night conversation to show how the Knowlio chatbot works.

The problem: questions don't arrive during office hours

Your website is open day and night, but your customer service is not. Many enquiries come in during the evening, at the weekend or over lunch, when nobody is around to reply. According to a widely cited Harvard Business Review study, companies that responded to an online enquiry within an hour were roughly seven times more likely to have a meaningful conversation than those that responded later. Almost a quarter of the companies studied never responded at all.

In practice, it looks like this:

  • the visitor has a question, but there is nobody to ask, so they move on;
  • they fill in your quote request form, but by morning they have also contacted three other companies;
  • the next day you answer the same ten basic questions by email, even though the answers are already on your website, the visitor just couldn't find them.

A lost lead never shows up in any statistics. It simply never becomes a customer.

A real example: a late-night conversation on the SimpleSMS website

SimpleSMS is our own SMS sending service, and its website runs a Knowlio chatbot. On 22 October 2026 at 10:52 pm, a visitor explained that they wanted to send SMS reminders to their customers after an appointment was booked on their website. They asked whether the service was suitable for this, how much it costs, what data is needed to send a message, whether it is pay-as-you-go or prepaid, and how to connect it to their own website.

We quote the conversation anonymised and shortened, and we do not disclose any information about the visitor.

Visitor: I'd like to send SMS reminders from my website after someone books an appointment. Is SimpleSMS suitable for this? How much does it cost, and how do I connect it?

Within a few seconds, the bot replied step by step:

  • How it works: after the booking, the website sends the SMS with an API call; the main parameters of the call are country_code, area_code, number and message.
  • Integration: REST and SOAP APIs with token authentication; the REST base URL is https://api.simplesms.hu/rest/SMSapi/. A Postman collection and a PHP example are also available.
  • Prices: HUF 16.9 net per SMS (Basic), HUF 15.9 (Standard) and HUF 14.9 (Premium), with no monthly fee.
  • Payment: a prepaid balance with credit that never expires; top up by card (Stripe) or bank transfer. You can try it out with 10 free test messages.
  • Limits: one SMS can be up to 160 characters, or 70 with accented or special characters; only businesses can register.
  • A word of caution: only send reminder SMS messages if you have a legal basis for it, meaning the customer has consented or it is necessary for performing the contract.

Then came a question the knowledge base had no answer to: can the system automatically warn you when your balance is running low?

Knowlio: I don't have reliable information about this, so I'd rather not guess. It's best to ask customer service directly.

Throughout the conversation, response times were between 3.7 and 13 seconds. Late at night and without any staff involved, the visitor got everything they needed to make a decision, and the business owner could pick up the conversation the next morning with a well-informed lead.

What can the Knowlio AI chatbot do?

It answers from your own knowledge base

Knowlio is a RAG-based chatbot: it only answers from what you teach it, such as your documents, your files on Google Drive or the content of your website. It doesn't pull answers from the internet, so prices, parameters and terms stay exactly the same as in your official materials.

It doesn't make up what it doesn't know

This was the most important moment in the example. A chatbot is trustworthy when it never promises something your company cannot deliver. If the knowledge base has no answer, Knowlio says so and points the visitor to customer service.

It is on duty around the clock and replies in seconds

No opening hours, no "we'll call you back on Monday". Visitors get an answer the moment they ask, whether it is eleven at night or Sunday morning.

It handles pricing and technical questions too

It does more than tell people your opening hours. If the information is in the knowledge base, it compares plans, explains payment options and gives a developer precise answers with API parameters and endpoints.

You can see what your customers ask

The analytics let you review conversations, so you can see what visitors are interested in and where your knowledge base has gaps. The balance alert question above is a good example of something worth adding to the knowledge base and the website.

Quick to set up

Create the bot, upload your knowledge material, paste the widget code into your website, and you are done. No developer needed, and setup takes a few dozen minutes. On higher plans, the chatbot can also ask for the visitor's name and phone number, turning a late-night enquiry into a lead you can call back in the morning.

Who is a website AI chatbot for?

  • Service providers and small businesses, where the owner answers enquiries personally and has no time during the day.
  • Webshops, where customers keep asking the same questions about shipping, sizes, payment or warranty.
  • SaaS and technical products, where prospects ask about pricing, integration and the API, as in the SimpleSMS example.
  • Appointment-based businesses (salons, clinics, consultants), where most questions arrive in the evening, after work.
  • Internal use as well: as a company assistant, Knowlio also answers your team's questions based on internal documents.

Frequently asked questions about AI chatbots

How much does an AI chatbot for a website cost?

Having an agency build a custom chatbot can cost several hundred thousand forints. With Knowlio, the website chatbot is a monthly subscription: plans and current prices are listed on the knowlio.cloud pricing page, and you can try it for free.

What if the chatbot gives a wrong answer?

Knowlio works only from your own knowledge base and tells the visitor when it doesn't have the answer. That is why it matters to keep your uploaded materials up to date; reviewing conversations quickly shows you what needs to be added.

Do I need a developer?

No. The widget is a code snippet that you paste into your website template or an HTML block. If your website was built by APPON, we can help with this too.

Does it replace customer service?

It doesn't replace it, it takes the load off. The bot answers recurring questions, and your team can focus on individual cases and well-informed leads.

Try it on your own website

If your enquiries also tend to arrive in the evening and disappear by morning, set up a Knowlio chatbot using your own materials. In a few minutes you will see how it would answer your visitors. Start for free on knowlio.cloud →
